Montgomery County voters will pick two new county judges this year. (Update: Coggins and Giamporcaro were endorsed by majority vote at the MCRC convention)

Montgomery County Republican Committee (MCRC) will hold a forum here to meet those vying for those seats, candidates for jury commissioner and the four sitting judges seeking another 10 years.
The forum will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday January 24, 2013 at Methacton High School in Worcester. Another forum was held Jan. 22 in Whitemarsh.

There are three Republicans, all women, interested in filling the two seats, he added. They are:

  • Maureen Coggins, a former county prosecutor from Upper Hanover now in private practice after serving a stint as the chief public defender in Lehigh County;
  • Joanna Cruz, a former county assistant public defender from Lansdale now in private practice (she works in MCRC’s leader, Bob Kerns’, law office) while serving on the Delaware River Port Authority; and
  • Montgomery County Deputy District Attorney Sharon Giamporcaro, a Lower Merion resident who has served as juvenile division chief since 1994.

Both Coggins and Cruz have been unsuccessful in prior runs for a judge seat. This is the first time for Giamporcaro.

The GOP’s executive committee (area leaders) will meet Jan. 31 to vote on endorsement recommendations.

However, it is the party’s approximate 800 committeepeople in Montgomery County who have the final say on endorsements for the May 21 GOP primary election. The party’s endorsement convention is Feb. 7.

The members also endorsed Merry Woods for Jury Commissioner.
